Arkansas law requires drivers and front-seat passengers to wear safety belts; violations may result in a fine not exceeding twenty-five dollars ($25.00), plus court costs or fees. All children under the age of fifteen (15) must use appropriate safety restraints while the vehicle is moving.
Obey posted speed limit signs. The maximum speed applies in ideal conditions; reduce your speed for slippery roads, poor visibility, curves, standing water, or other unsafe conditions.
If you are under twenty-one (21), an alcohol concentration of 0.02% in your breath or blood can lead to arrest for Underage Driving Under the Influence; a conviction could revoke your license until you reach twenty-one (21) years of age and result in a $2000 fine. Under eighteen (18) years of age, cell phone use—including hands-free devices—is not allowed while driving except for an emergency.
When approaching a stopped school bus with red lights flashing, make a complete stop and do not pass until the bus begins moving without its red lights flashing; you need not stop for a bus in the opposite lane if a median twenty (20) feet or more wide separates traffic. Do not park on a crosswalk or within twenty (20) feet of a crosswalk at an intersection, or within thirty (30) feet of a pedestrian safety zone.
On a multilane highway, move to the farthest lane from a stopped law enforcement, ARDOT, utility, construction, or towing vehicle with flashing lights whenever possible; if moving over is unsafe or impossible, slow to a safe speed. For an approaching emergency vehicle using flashing lights and a siren, pull over as far right as possible.
At “3 WAY,” “4 WAY,” and “ALL WAY” stop signs, the first driver to reach the intersection goes first after stopping completely. Drivers entering from a driveway, alley, or roadside must yield to vehicles already on the main road.
