Kansas law requires all occupants to use safety restraints in passenger vehicles. Police may stop a vehicle solely for an unrestrained adult in a front seat or an unrestrained child anywhere in the vehicle.
Never drive faster than is reasonable and prudent for current road, traffic, weather, vehicle, and physical conditions. Unless posted otherwise, maximum speeds are Thirty (30) miles per hour in urban districts, Seventy-five (75) miles per hour on designated separated multilane highways, Sixty-five (65) miles per hour on State or Federal Highways, Fifty-five (55) miles per hour on County or Township roads, and 20 mph in properly marked school zones and business districts.
In Kansas, .08 BAC or higher violates the law, and drivers under (21) can also be arrested for alcohol impairment at [.02%]. Kansas prohibits using an electronic device to “write, send, or read” written communications while driving, including texting and email, but not GPS devices or weather reports.
Stop when meeting or overtaking a school, church, or day care bus that is loading or unloading children, and remain stopped until its STOP signal is retracted and red lights are off; opposing traffic on a divided highway need not stop. Always yield to pedestrians, even outside crosswalks, and come to a complete stop for a person guided by a dog or carrying a white cane.
When approaching a stationary emergency vehicle displaying flashing lights, including a towing or recovery vehicle, move out of the closest lane if it is safe and possible; otherwise, slow to a speed safe for road, weather, and traffic conditions. Obey law enforcement or emergency services personnel at the scene.
Always yield to pedestrians and, when turning left, to oncoming vehicles going straight or turning right. At an uncontrolled intersection, yield to vehicles already in the intersection and those coming from the right; at a 4-way stop, the first vehicle goes first, or the vehicle on the right if vehicles arrive together.
