Everything a Georgia parent needs in one place — required practice hours, night-driving rules, permit age, and what the written test looks like — plus a free log that keeps the hours straight.
Requirements summarized from the official Georgia driver handbook.
Requirements: Pass the knowledge and vision tests. Log 40 supervised hours, including 6 at night.
Restrictions: A licensed driver 21+ must be in the front passenger seat. No wireless devices.
Requirements: Hold the permit 12 months and 1 day violation-free, complete the 40 logged hours (and Joshua's Law driver education), and pass the road test.
Restrictions: No driving midnight-6 a.m. First 6 months: no non-family passengers under 21; next 6 months: no more than one.
Requirements: At 18 with a clean record for the previous 12 months.
Restrictions: None specific to age.
In Georgia every occupant of a passenger vehicle under 18 must be belted, and anyone in the front seat must be secured by a lap and shoulder belt. That applies on every trip, no matter how short.
Georgia posts maximum limits and lowers them in school and construction zones, and driving too slowly to keep up with traffic is also illegal. A conviction for 75 mph or more on a two-lane road, or 85 mph anywhere, adds a state Super Speeder fee on top of local fines.
A driver under 21 in Georgia is considered under the influence at 0.02 grams BAC - about one drink. Georgia's Hands-Free Law also bars holding or supporting a phone with any part of your body; use a mount, headphones, or a wireless device instead.
When approaching an emergency, sanitation, or utility service vehicle parked on the shoulder, move over to the next lane if safely possible. If you cannot move over, slow down below the speed limit and be prepared to stop.
In Georgia you must stop when a school bus displays flashing red lights and an extended stop arm, and you may not move again until the arm is withdrawn and the bus resumes motion. On a two-lane road, traffic in both directions must stop. On a divided highway with a median or unpaved separation, only traffic traveling in the same direction as the bus must stop; oncoming traffic on the other side of the median may proceed with caution. A center turn lane does not count as a divider, so drivers on both sides must stop.
